Meet Ana Victoria Espino, the World’s First Lawyer With Down Syndrome

History has been made in Zacatecas, Mexico. Twenty-five-year-old Ana Victoria Espino de Santiago has become the world's first lawyer with Down Syndrome. Espino received her law degree from Universidad Autónoma de Zacatecas, having studied in the institution's law school for five years. Espino pushed through the obstacles to reach her goal with the help of a support system, determinedly navigating an educational system that wasn't designed for people with special needs.

Unlike the U.S. and other countries, in Mexico, there is no bar exam—getting a law degree is enough to be a lawyer. However, rather than defending people in the court of law, Espino is more interested in politics. Specifically, she aims to become a representative and use her legal knowledge to improve conditions for people with disabilities.

For Espino, becoming a lawyer was a long-time dream. Getting her degree wasn't an easy task, but she was surrounded by her family and people who believed in her. After graduating high school, Espino applied to university and aced the admission exam. However, the school's then-rector met up with her and told her she couldn't be admitted to the school as it lacked the conditions for a person with Down syndrome. Moved by her unwavering spirit, a professor stepped up and offered to help Espino. Throughout her five years of college, the teacher accompanied Espino to all of her classes, helped her study, and prepared her for exams.

“I really like law for [it allows] defending people with disabilities and people’s rights and defending my personal rights,” Espino told NTR TV. “[To] help people with disabilities, help those who do not have a voice, because that is why I am a lawyer.”

She also took a moment to commend those who made it possible for her to achieve her dream: “Teachers play a crucial role in creating a more inclusive educational environment.” She also calls for educators to be supportive, listen to their students, and offer additional help when needed.

Espino's career as an advocate for people with disabilities predates her pursuing a degree. Her first encounters with the realities of law took place at legislative forums, where she shared her story to shine a light on people with disabilities. Espino is also a talented artist, holding several exhibitions, including one in the lobby of the Congress of the Union in Mexico City.

As for the future, Espino has a very clear image of what she wants to achieve. She told Zacatecas En Imagen, “I see myself being a local representative, I am passionate about the law, and I want to pave the way so that all people who live with a disability can occupy decision-making spaces, because our condition does not silence our voice, will and ability to contribute to improving our state.”

Showers are a staple of our daily routines, but the specifics about them are up to each person. Particularly, the best time to take one has long been a contentious debate. But what's actually the best time to shower? Some swear by showering in the morning and others like to bathe at night. To settle the debate, Dr. Jason Singh has chimed in, revealing one option is indeed better than the other.

Singh begins by explaining the benefits of showering at night. “When you have night warm showers, it releases melatonin which is good for your sleep. When you’re out of the shower and towel out, your body is back to normal temperature. These two combined transition into better sleep,” he explains.

The doctor also points out that night showers wash away all the grime that accumulates throughout the day, whether it's environmental pollutants or simply your body at work. On top of that, night showers are better for those with dry and sensitive skin, as they are better at hydrating your skin right before you go to bed.

Meanwhile, Singh pointed out that morning showers get rid of bacteria and secretions that build up, bringing the skin to a “more hygienic baseline.” This leads to the doctor's verdict: “Overall, a nighttime shower has more benefits to it, but a morning shower has really only one benefit.”

Ultimately, Singh's take has more to do with making the most out of the added benefits of a night shower and less with its effectiveness at keeping you squeaky clean. After all, a better sleep and healthier skin are part of good hygiene, and getting a little help just by jumping in the shower is unbeatable.

To stay up to date with the doctor's clever advice, you can follow Dr. Singh on TikTok.

He explains that warm nighttime showers help you sleep better and are better for people with sensitive and dry skin. This is in addition to the shower removing the dirt that accumulates during the day.

Since its inception in 1916, the National Park Service (NPS) has strived to protect natural environments and offer a world-class experience to all its visitors. Now, thanks to a generous donation, it'll continue to uphold these missions. The National Park Foundation announced it has received the largest grant in its history, a $100 million gift from Lilly Endowment Inc.

“For over 50 years, private philanthropy has played a vital role in bridging the gap between park needs and available funding,” said Will Shafroth, president and CEO of the National Park Foundation, the fundraising arm of the NPS created by Congress in the 1960s. “This grant will allow us to supercharge our efforts to ensure our national parks are for everyone, for generations to come.”

The money will be used to address the needs of the more than 400 national park sites that make up the NPS, from famed sprawling sites such as Yellowstone National Park in Montana and Yosemite National Park in California to the Lincoln Memorial in Washington, D.C., and the Birmingham Civil Rights National Monument in Birmingham, Alabama.

“Our founders were inspired by the beauty and wonders of the natural world and supportive of research and educational programs about archaeology and the cultural history of our nation,” said N. Clay Robbins, chairman and CEO of the Indianapolis-based Lilly Endowment, which was created by members of the family behind the pharmaceutical firm Eli Lilly and Company. “We are pleased therefore to further their interests through this grant.”

The funds will be allocated to four key areas—creating opportunities for young people, thus inspiring the the next generation of park stewards; ensuring the health and longevity of the fragile ecosystems and species, such as the trout; leveraging new technology that makes the parks more accessible and engaging; and delivering a more comprehensive historical narrative that includes underrepresented groups.

“The impact of this gift will be felt in our parks and in surrounding communities for generations to come,” added Chuck Sams, director of NPS. “This is a truly visionary investment, and an example of how the power of philanthropy can amplify this crucial work that we all believe in so much.”

Watch Botswana’s President React to 2,492-Carat Diamond, the Second-Largest Diamond Ever Found

Botswana is the second-largest producer of natural diamonds globally, and yet, that doesn't stop them from being surprised about the precious stones that pop up in the country. Recently, the largest diamond found in more than a century, and the second largest of all time, was unearthed at a mine in Botswana. To present it to the world, a viewing ceremony led by Botswana's president Mokgweetsi Masisi was thrown. The diamond turned out to be so massive that the politician's baffled reaction caused as much commotion as the stone itself.

Not expecting the hefty weight of the stone, the president closed his eyes and his palms out to hold the diamond. The stone was then gently dropped into his hands, which caught the president by surprise. Masisi opened his eyes to see the diamond, expressing an animated, “What?!” and growing increasingly bewildered.

“It is overwhelming,” Masisi said. “I am lucky to have seen it in my time.” He then took a better look at it with the help of magnifying glasses.

The huge 2,492-carat diamond weighs approximately half a kilogram (a little over 1 pound) and is yet to be named.  The discovery was announced by Canadian mining company Lucara Diamond Corp, which found the rough diamond from its Karowe Mine in central Botswana. Lucara said the “high-quality” stone was located using X-ray technology designed to find large, high-value diamonds.

Officials said it was too early to value the stone or decide how it would be sold. It is one of a handful of massive diamonds found in Botswana in recent years, which includes a smaller diamond unearthed at the same mine that was sold for $63 million in 2016. Overall, diamonds account for well over half the financial value of Botswana's total exports.

The record for the largest diamond ever found belongs to the 3,106-carat Cullinan diamond found in South Africa in 1905. It was then turned into 105 stones of assorted cuts. Since Botswana's reserves are far from depleted, a new diamond that could break the record is an exciting and perennial possibility.

The second largest diamond ever found was recently unearthed at a mine in Botswana, and president Mokgweetsi Masisi had the best reaction to seeing it in person.

Sewing machines are often used to create garments and accessories; but, for artist Erick Medel, they are fully rounded artistic tools. Using colorful thread on deep blue, heavyweight denim, Medel depicts the daily routines of the latino community of Los Angeles' Boyle Heights neighborhood, where he lives. His images, which blur the lines between photography and memory, truly capture the vibrancy that runs through the area.

Medel began experimenting with thread art in 2019. “At that time, I was creating soft sculptures with fabric, then I began to introduce thread in the work to add small details,” he tells My Modern Met. “In 2020, with the lockdowns, I started to see the sewing machine as a drawing tool, which led me to experiment with that process using denim and thread primarily. Eventually, I started to stretch them like a canvas over a frame.”

Medel works mostly from photographs, but he sometimes designs a composition on his own. At the center of his art, are the immigrant communities of Boyle Heights, through which he has rekindled a relationship with his heritage. “After returning from the east coast for grad school, I began to have a deeper understanding of my identity,” the artist recalls. “I moved to a heavily Latino immigrant neighborhood, which reminded me a lot of my childhood in Mexico. I find it very inspirational and that’s why I make work about it.”

In Medel's works, the intangible connection between the community members works as a narrative thread. Whether it's a tray full of pan dulce at a local bakery, a man painting a mural, a flower arrangement by a door, or happy couples dancing together at a plaza, there's always a sense of life. Even though many figures remain faceless, the energy of the community persists. Boyle Heights is clearly the place where many have found themselves comfortably at home.

Ultimately, while only a handful of people live in Boyle Heights, the feeling of belonging is universal. That's why Medel hopes his works “create some kind of connection, on a human level, even if they aren’t from the same background as me.” He says, “If it can evoke a memory or emotion, that’s successful to me. For the people from my background, I hope they might see themselves or loved ones in the work.”

The exhibition Erick Medel: Vidas runs through August 31 at Charlie James Gallery in Los Angeles. To learn more, visit the gallery's website.

In February 2024, the Gonzalez family threw a party to celebrate Valentine's Day. There were matching pink t-shirts, a wall filled with heart-shaped balloon, and games to pass the time. They split the guests into two groups—men and women—aiming to see which gender would do best in each task. When it came time for a hula hoop challenge, the results were clear. And now, the video of the moment has gone viral, sparking a debate about “male vs. female intelligence.”

The game is simple. The group has to pass through a hula hoop, from one person onto the next, until the last teammate has released the hoop. They stand hand in hand, except for those on the edges, meaning they are at the mercy of their bodies to move the hula hoop along. Whoever finishes the challenge in the shortest amount of time wins.

The Gonzalezes had the men go first. They really struggled to pass the hula hoop from one person to the next, relying on awkward little jumps and bumps—the fact that it didn't cause anyone to fall down is sheer luck. When it was the women's turn, a clever display of strategy and teamwork unfolded. The first woman went through the hoop and held it for all the other women to cross through while holding hands. In the video, a man can be heard shouting, “What is this? That's not fair,” but the damage is done.  The endeavor took the men 32 seconds; the women did it in almost half the time—17 seconds.

The Miami-based family shared their findings with the world. While some have taken the video as proof that women are smarter than men, the family has leaned into the humor of it, replying with laughing emojis to comments such as, “That's how quickly we decipher the inconveniences and make them convenient.”

Female Afghan Medical Students Resettle in Scotland To Finish Their Studies After Taliban Education Ban

When the Taliban took over Afghanistan, women and girls were stripped of many, if not most of their rights. Female students were barred from attending university, shattering the dreams of thousands. Now, 19 female Afghan students who had to give up medicine will be able to complete their studies in Scotland.

The project was spearheaded by the Linda Norgrove Foundation, which worked with UK and Scottish governments to arrange visas and places at medical schools. After over three years of work and trying to break through red tape, the students arrived in Edinburgh last week.

The Scottish Government was able to amend student funding, allowing the Afghan women to be treated as home students, meaning they are eligible for free tuition and living costs support . However, the road wasn't easy.

“We and the students have worked to clear many hurdles for them to travel to Scotland: TB tests, English tests, university interviews via Skype, negotiating the border travel to Pakistan to apply for UK visas, Pakistani visas, biometrics, accommodation, student funding applications, student accommodation applications, bank accounts…the list goes on,” writes the Linda Norgrove Foundation.

Despite all the work, it was all worth it. “We’re all delighted to have finally succeeded after so much frustration, said John Norgrove, from the foundation. “Finally these 19 incredibly talented young women get their future back with the opportunity of a tremendous education and a career. The alternative for them in Afghanistan wasn’t good.”

This endeavor spotlights the mission of the Linda Norgrove Foundation, named after a 36-year-old aid worker who devoted her life to helping Afghan people before she was kidnapped and her life was taken during a failed rescue attempt. Norgrove’s parents quickly set up a foundation to continue her mission. Over the last 14 years, the foundation has raised more than £3 million to fund projects for women and girls in Afghanistan.

Omulbanin Sultani, one of the 19 women relocated to Scotland, described the time since the Taliban takeover as the most challenging years for her, her friends, and all women in Afghanistan.

“We endured 1,000 days of suffering to reach this point, 1,000 days of being confined to our homes, 1,000 days of having our voices silenced. One thousand days with nothing but tears and sorrow, 1,000 days of our lives wasting away.”

Now, the 21-year-old will continue her studies at the University of St. Andrews. “When we heard about the visa approval, we were so excited I felt like I was flying. We are going from hell to paradise.”

19 female Afghan students who had to give up their medical studies following the Taliban takeover will be able to complete their education in Scotland.

With the Olympic Games over and the Paralympics less than a week away, people are still buzzing about the best athletes from around the world gathered in one place. Inspired by the international display of talent, Wisdom Kaye has channeled this feeling into what he does best—fashion. The director, photographer, and model and has styled incredibly elegant outfits inspired by countries around the world for his “High Fashion Olympics,” a display of his boundless creativity and unique vision.

“Originally the goal for each look was to pull from different cultural aspects of each country to make their respective look, for example with China the blazer underneath the coat is worn with the collar up to parallel a Tanghuang, a traditional Chinese jacket which features the mandarin collar which originated in imperial China,” explains Kaye. “The texture and material chosen for the the outer coat is to represent the dragon, which is the fifth animal in the Chinese zodiac cycle, which corresponds to the year 2024, the Wood Dragon and the year of the recent Olympic Games, the star brooches also representing the starts on the flag.”

Kaye hoped to cover all the countries with this approach—evoking the country's flag and featuring pieces created by designers originating from the respective country. However, once he started working on it, he realized the plan was just out of reach due to time constraints, settling for either of the two.

Despite the setbacks, Kaye delivered 30 colorful and complex outfits. Most commendably, he excels at playing around with limited color palettes and motifs. For example, while the U.S., UK, France, and Australia flags share similar colorways, the stylist cleverly creates very different outfits that also reflect each countries values and history. While the UK gets the royal treatment with a long coat, the Australian outfit is more laid back and nods to the Southern Cross on the flag with discreet shiny accessories.

Take a look at all of the fashionable young man's outfits from his “High Fashion Olympics” and make sure to follow Kaye on Instagram to stay up to date with his stylish experiments.

Polly Pocket was one of the most iconic toys of the 90s. Its tiny size made it perfect for playing anywhere, while details of each set allowed kids to see themselves in fun situations, such as dressing up, camping, or hosting a sleepover with friends. Turning this dream into a life-sized reality, Airbnb has launched a Polly Pocket home that guests can book for a night this September.

The Polly Pocket Airbnb home is inspired by the ‘90s Slumber Party Fun compact. The vintage-themed, two-story house is full of nostalgic details, as well as packed with cleverly designed items to relive all your favorite playdates from yesteryear. Once you've explored every nook and cranny and did all your favorite activities, you'll retire to a charming tent to sleep under the stars. As if the design weren't cool enough, the whole structure glows in the dark.

Among the things to do at the Polly Pocket Airbnb home are getting ready at Polly’s vanity, stuffed with nostalgic hair and nail accessories of her favorite colors; raiding the fridge to have a picnic with every snack your 90s heart can dream of; try on all of her gummy-textured wardrobe to create fun outfits; make charm bracelets for you and your friends; and watch a movie with your friends in Polly's spacious living room.

The experience marks Polly Pocket's 35th anniversary. “I can’t wait for you to visit and help celebrate my birthday in my most epic compact ever,” Polly said in a statement. “Let’s have some serious slumber party fun in my hometown of Littleton, where we make the ordinary extraordinary. There’s adventure to be had from my closet full of nostalgic fashion fun to the surprises I’ve left hidden around the compact. The fun is endless!”

As a nod to her debut in 1989, guests can request to book one of three one-night stays occurring September 12 to 14 for four guests each, at $89 per person. The Polly Pocket home is located in Littleton, Massachusetts, so guests should be able to travel to and from there. For those unable to book the stay, they can also visit Polly Pocket for one of the 21 daytime experiences available for up to 12 guests from September 16 to October 6. If you're interested, make sure to submit your request at airbnb.com/pollypocket before 11:59 p.m. PT on August 28.

LinkedIn can be useful for finding a job or hiring people, but hardly anyone would consider it a fun place to hang out. Luckily, with a little bit of creativity, the social media site designated for professional networking can actually be a source of amusement. This seems to be the driving force behind LinkedIn Lyrics, a TikTok account that turns names found on the platform into the words of popular songs. Or as they say, “We turn resumes into remixes.”

The concept is simple yet incredibly funny. Song lyrics are written out on the screen using the names of users found on LinkedIn. Of course, they’re not spelled the way the lyrics originally were. For instance, the Red Hot Chili Peppers song “Otherside” contains the lyrics, “How long, how long will I slide? / Separate my side, I don’t” On the screen, though, we see the profile names “Hao Long, Hao Long, Will Isley / Seppe Raes, Mae Saeed, Hai Dong.”

The bit is elevated by the fact that each name is accompanied by their profile picture in which they look very professional, whether it be with a big corporate smile or a serious stare into the camera. The creators even find matching names for parts of the song that are vocalizations or hummed. No one is safe. Through these videos we see investors, executives, athletes, architects, managers, and officers from all around the world.

The creators are open to all music genres too. So far they've experimented with rock anthems such as Queen's “Bohemian Rhapsody” and Blink-182's “All the Small Things,” with their most successful video so far being that of Red Hot Chili Peppers' “Otherside.” But they also have a pop edge, and have found names to fit the lyrics for Lady Gaga's “Bad Romance” and Taylor Swift's “We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together.”

To stay up to date with their videos, make sure to follow them on TikTok. Who knows? Maybe your name fits one of your favorite song's lyrics and you'll do a professional cameo in their next video.
